St. Kitts, sister island to Nevis in the Caribbean island nation of St. Kitts and Nevis, has incredibly diverse scenery...black and white sand beaches, volcanic peaks, lush tropical rain forests, fields of swaying sugar cane, rolling open countryside dotted with stone churches, cliffs and flats. All is rolled into an island of 68 square miles, 23 long and 5 across at its widest point. St. Kitts was the first English settlement in the Leeward Islands and afterwards fought many battles with France in order to keep her. Sugar was the main industry here, and plantations can still be seen, some in ruins, some incorporated into fantastic inns. Still uncrowded and unspoiled...a relaxed and casual atmosphere prevails here where present and past combine to make an inviting destination.

Island Inns specializes in luxury hotels and villas throughout the Caribbean and the Bahamas.

INFORMATION ABOUT ST. KITTS
BEACHES: Black and white sand beaches can be found on St. Kitts...white sand in the southern end and black sand in the northern end. Surf is mostly calm, although the eastern side of the island, which faces the Atlantic will have more vigorous waves. All beaches are open to the public with the most tranquil waters and largest stretches of sand being in the southern area. The uncrowded beaches of the southeast peninsula are reached via a small dirt road.

SNORKELING AND DIVING: There are excellent snorkeling and dive sites here...many of which are just beginning to be explored. Snorkelers can investigate a wreck in shallow water and a tug boat which lies partly exposed. Divers can find a rare black coral or visit the marine life on long unexplored reefs. There are also wrecks and reef dives that plunge to 80 feet.

WATERSPORTS: Waterskiing, jetskiing and windsurfing can all be done on St. Kitts. There are also kayaks and surfboards for rent.

BOATING AND SAILING: Charter sail boats, motorboats and catamarans for day sails and sunset cruises. You can also find a glass-bottom boat and a glass-bottom sailing catamaran as well as kayaks, hobie cats and sunfish.

HIKING: You can take a full or half-day guided hike through the rainforest, or a full day hike to the volcanic rim and on the way learn about the plants and birds you are seeing as well as spotting green vervet monkeys. You can hike canyons and see petroglyphs or trek through plantations. There are many hiking tours to choose from.

TENNIS: Many courts are available including ones lit for night play.

FISHING: Fishing charters here are easily arranged and will pursue wahoo, kingfish, barracuda, tuna and grouper.

HORSEBACK RIDING: You can ride on the beach or through the rain forest with informative local guides.

GOLF: There is an 18-hole, par 72, championship golf course designed by British Open Champion Peter Thompson.

EXPLORING: You'll find a lot of history by touring St. Kitts. Brimstone Hill Fortress was built by the British in 1690 in order to repel any French advances on the island. At nearly 800 feet above the sea it commands a spectacular view of neighboring islands. It was the site of a large British/French battle in 1782. Partially restored, it covers 38 acres and has tours and nature trails. Bloody Point was the site of a joint effort by the British and French to annihilate the local Carib indian population...2,000 indians died here. If you would like to view some of that indian culture, you can see petroglyphs at the Wingfield Estate. Nearby is Old Road Town at Old Road Bay, the sight of the first permanent European settlement in the West Indies in 1624. A tour of the Southeast Peninsula will show you some dramatic scenery...secluded beaches and picturesque lagoons which are home to monkeys and tropical birds who live in this protected area.

SHOPPING: Duty-free shopping is found in Basseterre where you'll find jewelry, china and perfumes among other items. You can also find locally produced batik and hand-painted cotton dresses and T-shirts. Island arts and crafts include hand-painted ceramics, paper-mache items and jams.

NIGHTLIFE: Clubs feature all types of music for dancing...some have live music. Some hotels offer steel bands, reggae music and calypso in the evenings. There is also one casino on St. Kitts.
