Nevis, the smaller island of the Caribbean island nation of St. Kitts and Nevis is 36 square miles of lush green vegitation with a rainforest and mountain peak at its center. It is separated from St. Kitts by a 2-mile wide channel and like her sister island was a major sugar producing center from colonial times when the British set up their plantations here. Many of these have been converted into inns. Green vervet monkeys can be spotted in the trees or amid tropical foiliage. Nevis has a quiet, easy-going atmosphere and although many activities can be found, relaxing in a hammock is probably the most popular.

Island Inns specializes in luxury hotels and villas throughout the Caribbean and the Bahamas.

INFORMATION ABOUT NEVIS
BEACHES: Pinney's Beach is a 4-mile stretch of soft sand and palm trees on the western side of the island backed by a beautiful lagoon. Although well-known it is not crowded and the water is calm. There are other beaches situated along the western and northern coast which are good for swimming, fishing, snorkeling and jogging. All beaches on Nevis are public.

SNORKELING AND DIVING: Snorkeling can be found directly off some beaches or at offshore reefs. A particularly good spot is near Cades Bay where you can explore a village which was washed into the sea. Divers of all level of experience can explore the many shipwrecks in the area. They lie in all depths of water. Coral reefs, some relatively undiscovered, and The Caves, which are a series of coral grottos in about 40 feet of water are other very good dive sites.

WATERSPORTS: Calm waters and a constant breeze make this a great spot for windsurfing.

BOATING AND SAILING: The waters around Nevis are calm and breezy making sailing a pleasure and there are places to charter sail boats and motor yachts for day sails, sunset cruises or trips to other islands. Hobi Cats and Sunfish can be rented.

GOLF: Some say Nevis is home to the best golf course in the Caribbean...the Robert Trent Jones, Jr. 18-hole, par 72, championship course at the Four Seasons Resort.

TENNIS: You can find indoor tennis with clay, grass and tar surfaces. There are lighted courts and professional coaches available.

FISHING: Fishing charters here are easily arranged and will persue wahoo, kingfish, barracuda, tuna and grouper.

HORSEBACK RIDING: You can ride on the beach or through the rain forest with informative local guides.

HIKING: Guided hikes through the rainforest around Nevis Peak are very popular. You'll see green vervet monkeys, colorful birds and lush flowers and spectacular views. There are also hikes where you can explore the archeological and agricultural hisory of the island.

EXPLORING: In Charlestown, the capital, you can see the Alexander Hamilton House, which was his birthplace. Here you'll find the Museum of Nevis History as well as Hamilton memorabilia. More of historical interest can be found at the Horatio Nelson Museum which houses a huge collection of his letters, documents and furniture. Lord Nelson married Fannie Nisbet (who lived on a plantation here) at Montpelier House whose few ruins can still be visited. Following the Hamilton/Nelson history route, St. John's Church in Fig Tree Parish houses the register for Hamilton's birth in 1757 and the marriage certificate of Nelson and Nisbett in 1787. Luxurious mineral bath spas were very popular with Europeans here in the 1700s and you can visit the ruins of Bath House and Spring House and even take a mineral bath if you wish.

SHOPPING: Cotton Ginnery Complex is a small shopping mall located on the waterfront in Charlestown. Here you'll find arts and crafts made by local artisans. Also in Charlestown you can find boutiques and galleries selling a range of items such as batik, ceramics, carvings and stamps.

NIGHTLIFE: Music and dancing can be found at several places here and feature buffets and island music, particularly on the weekends.
