INFORMATION ABOUT THE BAHAMAS

BEACHES: All beaches are public to the high-water mark, although access may be restricted. Surf ranges from total calm with little undertow to powerful ocean waves where you should exercise caution. New Providence Island boasts a number of white sand beaches...Cable Beach is the most famous. This is a very active area where you'll find every watersport, restaurants, beach bars and local entertainment. Harbour Island is known for its 3-mile long pink sand beach which is quiet and undisturbed by crowds, where you can stroll, sun or swim in tranquility. Andros, commonly called "the sleeping giant" is the largest island of the Bahamas, yet it remains largely unexplored and sparsely populated. The east coast is one long beach, separated by areas of rocky shoreline, so you have miles of quiet, undisturbed sand. Emerald Bay on Great Exuma is a gently sloping crescent of soft, white sand that invites sunning, snorkeling or wading.

SCUBA DIVING & SNORKELING: Don a snorkel and drift on the surface of the calm water to explore one of the many reefs. There are thousands of dive sites throughout the Bahamas...reefs, wrecks, drop-offs and blue holes. There are dives for every day of the week and every level of expertise. Dive shops have scheduled dives or custom diving and will know the best places to go. Scuba and snorkeling excursions can be found on various islands. Andros: The third longest barrier reef in the world runs along the entire length of the eastern coast of Andros. Just a mile offshore, the reef offers fun-filled snorkeling and scuba diving. New Providence Island: There are many dive shops and dive sites to explore...caves, reefs, drop-offs and wrecks. Harbour Island: There are a number of sites here including the Blow Hole, an easy dive through grottos filled with parrot fish, tarpon and lobsters. There is a canyon dive of 90 feet, a drift dive upwards of 10 knots and a civil war train wreck in 20 feet of water. Two dive shops will guide you. A short distance from Great Exuma is Exuma Cays National Land and Sea Park which welcomes visitors to an inspiring sanctuary unspoiled by fishing or hunting. Divers can also explore the magnificent coral reef of Exuma Sound filled with caves, drop-offs and blue holes. Spectacular snorkeling and diving can be found close to the Four Seasons Resort and expert guides are on hand to explore the best sites.

WATERSPORTS: New Providence Island: Parasailing, jet skiing, waterskiing, canoeing and windsurfing can be found. There are also banana boat rides which are very popular with children. Harbour Island: Snorkeling can be done off the beach or on boat excursions. Boston Whalers can be rented for puttering around. Great Exuma: Kayaking, windsurfing and snorkeling are popular watersports here.

BOATING & SAILING: Many people like to island-hop among the 700 cays of the Bahamas...some of which can only be reached by boat. There are sheltered and protected waters and many marinas where you can tie up. Boats can be rented, with or without crew, throughout the islands. New Providence Island: There are 5 boat charter businesses to choose from. Andros: There is a marina at Kamalame Cay which has 9 boat slips. Harbour Island: There are 3 boat rental locations. Great Exuma: Private charter saioling and catamaran cruises complete with food and beverage service and crew can be arranged at the Four Seasons Resort.

GOLF: There are 18-hole, par 72 championship courses on Paradise Island and New Providence Island which are open to the public. The one on Paradise Island hosts tournaments annually. On Grand Bahama there are three courses. At the Four Seasons Resort Great Exuma you will find a Greg Norman designed 18-hole championship golf course set to become one of the world's greatest oceanside clubes.

TENNIS: There are a lot of courts in the Bahamas, most of them on New Providence and Grand Bahama. Paradise Island hosts tournaments. Nassau: Tennis can be found at 3 different locations and there is also a squash club. Many of the hotels on the Out Islands have tennis courts. Harbour Island: There are 3 courts at Pink Sands Hotel with one lit for night playing. Great Exuma: Peter Burwash International tennis facility is located at the Four Seasons Resort which offers six Har-Tru courts. Play day or night. Equipment and apparel are available at the pro shop where lessons can also be arranged.

FISHING: The Bahamas are famous for deep-sea fishing, fishing for marlin, bonefishing, bottom fishing and reef fishing and and charters are easily found on each island. There are more than 20 fishing tournaments open to visitors every year. Andros: The outer edge of the barrier reef drops off steeply into the Tongue of the Ocean, a 6,000 foot deep trench ideal for deep sea fishing. Andros is also one of the three best places in the world for bonefishing. Harbour Island: There are several locations to hire fishing charters and guides. Bonefishing, reef fishing and deep sea fishing can be arranged. Great Exuma: Renowned as one of the world's best locations for bone and sports fishing, the vast flats are the perfect habitat for bone fish.
